2021 Executive

The Officers and Executive of LGBT+ are responsible for the running of the organisation. Your current Exec were elected in January 2021, with the next set of elections (for the 2022 Exec) set to take place in the Autumn. The exec are usually elected in Autumn each year, and take up their duties on the 1st January for a year.

Gareth Lewis Shelton

Chair: Gareth Lewis Shelton

Gareth is an entrepreneur working in the creative industries, and holds a MSc in Political Economy of Europe, with a special interest in welfare and business.

Gareth is also a member of the London Region Exec, and can be found on Twitter at @garethlshelton.

Charley Hasted (Charley Hasted)

Vice Chair: Charley Hasted

Charley is an NHS emergency services worker and unpaid carer from Lambeth. They got into politics in 2004/5 after becoming Chair of Greenwich Young People's Council and finally joined the party in 2010 while studying for a degree in Human Rights Law. One thing led to another and they've now stood for Council and Parliament and are currently a 2021 GLA List candidate as the first non-binary person to run for the GLA.

They spent most of the coalition being visibly LibDem in the NUS (which was an experience). This along with their background as youth worker and teaching assistant, gave them a keen interest in youth empowerment and education. Their other other interests include disability issues (transport and inclusive green policy), health and human rights.

In their free time they can normally be found reading, gaming, singing and racking up a lengthy list of accidental electoral firsts.

Andy Hinton

Secretary: Andy Hinton

Andy is a bisexual man living in Wandsworth in south London. He was born in Leeds, and grew up mostly in Shrewsbury. He works in theatre sound, so is accustomed to the idea that he is doing a good job if most people don't know he's there at all.

He joined the Liberal Democrats under Charles Kennedy, on the basis of a belief that sitting waiting for politics to engage with you never got anybody anywhere, and having concluded on an assessment of the main parties that it was the closest one to him. He's not yet shifted in either of those beliefs, so the Lib Dems are stuck with him for the time being.

Alan Collins Rosell

Treasurer: Alan Collins Rosell

Alan is a bisexual man living in Gillingham. He was born in Chatham and aside from brief spells in Birmingham and Barcelona has lived in Medway for most of his life. He is currently studying for a masters in legal practice by distance learning at De Montfort University while working full time at a local firm of solicitors.

Alan joined the Liberal Democrats during the 2017 general election and has been the treasurer of the Medway local party since 2018. He has campaigned on mental health issues for many years and started campaigning on LGBT+ rights after coming out at the age of 30.

Outside of politics, Alan is also the treasurer for two local armed forces charities, volunteers for a youth organisation and is (slowly) learning Spanish and Catalan.

Jasmine Josephine Sakura-Rose

Jasmine Joséphine (Jaz) lives in the Valleys and has recently finished studying sign language at college. She was born in Brecon and now lives just outside Nelson.

Jaz studied Geology, Geophysics, and Archaeology at Durham University and then studied and train in law under the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives after moving back to the Valleys.

Jaz is a passionate campaigner for better healthcare and services for LGBTQ+ people, as well campaigning on GRA reform and trans rights.

Tara Copeland ()

Tara Copeland

Tara Copeland is a bisexual Canadian, currently living in London. Born and raised in Vancouver BC she moved to Edinburgh to pursue her undergraduate degree in history. She is now studying for her masters in history at goldsmiths, university of London. She's passionate about education, heritage, immigration, and the environment.

In the past, Tara has held many positions on the Young Liberals Executive including Policy Officer and Chair. She is also an elected member to the Federal Policy Committee.

Em Dean ()

Em Dean

Em Dean is a genderqueer/intersex, bisexual person recently imported to London from Sussex. They are a longtime human rights activist, historically in migrants and refugees activism, and more recently on transgender, nonbinary, and intersex issues.

Professionally, Em worked as a staff writer on immigration and politics for a regional Latin American newspaper in the Midwest US from 2007-2011, and is now an English language teacher. They are also a semi-professional cricket umpire active in various competitive leagues in Middlesex. In their spare time they are mostly found playing competitive online games, drinking tea, or photographing cats.

Em joined the Lib Dems on 24 June, 2016 and has been active in a number of campaigns in London and South Central, more notably in electoral agent, compliance, and comms roles. They have been Secretary of LDEA since March 2018, and are a member of Harrow Liberal Democrats.

Caron Lindsay is a member of the Federal Board and a former Treasurer of the Scottish Party. She is the editor of Liberal Democrat Voice. A lifelong feminist, she feels that there is no conflict between transgender rights and women's rights and rejects any attempt to set them against each other. She wants to help Plus take full advantage of the changes in support for party bodies to grow our membership and profile.

Jennie Rigg

Jennie is a cis bisexual polyamorous woman. She is a candidate assessor for the party, co-host of Glee Club (when there isn't a pandemic on), and the former chair of this organisation. She once resigned from the party on a point of principle: the principle hasn't changed, but the make up of the party has.

She lives in Yorkshire with her dogs, her son, and sundry partners. She is fond of science fiction, cocktails, and beards of all kinds.

Natasha is a bisexual woman who is currently Vice-Chair of the Lincoln, Sleaford and North Hykeham Liberal Democrats and is on the cusp of completing an MSc in Endangered Species Recovery and Conservation.

Nadya Fadih-Phoenix (Nadya Fadih-Phoenix)

Lib Dem Campaign for Racial Equality Rep: Nadya Fadih-Phoenix

Nadya is of MENA descent and is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Nadya is a Diversity and Inclusion Partner, and has 10 years' experience of working in HR and D&I in central government and the education and charity sectors. In those roles, Nadya has developed and delivered various equality and diversity training and awareness sessions, led on gender pay and ethnicity pay gap reporting and authored employee policies that have included; transgender equality, grievance, whistleblowing, bullying and harassment and modern slavery. Nadya is passionate about addressing the lack of BAME representation at the top of British organisations and so focused a research project on the subject.

Additionally, Nadya was an equality officer for a public sector trade union, representing members experiencing harassment and discrimination.

Nadya is a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
