Ludford: Helmer’s equal marriage slurs show UKIP’s true colours
Liberal Democrat European justice & human rights spokeswoman and London MEP Sarah Ludford has expressed outrage at UKIP MEP Roger Helmer's comments on same-sex marriage.
Sarah Ludford, who is also a Vice President of LGBT+ Lib Dems and an active member of the European Parliament lesbian & gay rights intergroup ILGA, said:
"Mr Helmer's backward comments are a disgrace. To link gay marriage to incest and polygamy typically scrapes the barrel of prejudice without any foundation whatsoever."
"Contrary to Nigel Farage's claim that Roger Helmer's defection to UKIP means people are taking the party seriously, it demonstrates that UKIP are even more of a bad joke than ever. The party is just a refuge for nasty extremists, and welcoming Helmer just shows their true colours."
"I am delighted that Cameron is no more to be deflected from equality than Clegg. There is widespread support in society for same-sex couples to have access to marriage, because of the realisation that this will strengthen the institution, not weaken it."
"The coalition government must stand firm by its commitment to same-sex marriage. I am confident Lynne Featherstone will continue her excellent work as Equalities Minister in progressing to a consultation leading to legislation."
