Steve Gilbert will invite Lib Dems to vote for Equal Marriage

Stephen Gilbert is the Lib Dem MP for St. Austell & Newquay

On Saturday, Stephen Gilbert MP visited the Outpost Housing Project in Newcastle which helps young LGBT people from the city to find somewhere safe to live.

The MP who is openly gay and chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group on Housing visited the service to see the effects of the project and hear what further support could be given to services such as the Outpost Housing Project.

Speaking after the visit, Mr Gilbert said:

"A constituent of mine recently contacted me after he was thrown out of his parents home when he came out to them as gay. It was a heart wrenching story that is sadly still far too common place in 21st century Britain.

"Everyone deserves somewhere safe to life where they are not subject to abuse or discrimination and I was thrilled to be able to support the work of the Outpost Housing Project which is a great example of the sort of service that we should see more of in the towns and cities up and down our country."

The Service Manger, Wendy Hodgson added:

"It was a pleasure and a privilege for me to meet Stephen Gilbert MP when he visited the Outpost Housing Project on 22nd October.

"The charity has been working successfully to help LGBT youth homeless since 1995, however in that time it has remained relatively unknown nationally. Awareness of and support for our work is an area we have been trying very hard to develop during 2011.

"We are therefore very grateful that Stephen has not only taken the time to visit the charity to find out about what we do, but has also said he is keen to keep in touch, and be informed on the progress we make with our plans to develop the service."
