New MP to open fifth Lib Dem LGBT Conference

June 23, 2010 2:17 PM

Newly elected MP Stephen Gilbert will open the fifth Lib Dem LGBT conference in Manchester this weekend.

The conference, hosted by LGBT equality group Delga, will consider the way ahead on LGBT liberation and equality in the light of the new Coalition Government. Many policies put forward by Delga and adopted by the party in the past have now entered the coalition's Programme for Government, such as opposing deportation of LGBT asylum seekers to states where they face proven risk of imprisonment, torture or execution.

Stephen Gilbert said, "As an openly gay MP, I am very passionate about supporting the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender people and I hope that I will be able to use my position as an MP to tackle some of the big issues that they, like me, face every day."
