LibDem Euro candidate condemns decision to ban Riga Pride event

May 16, 2009 4:13 PM

Jonathan Fryer, the Number 2 Liberal Democrat candidate for London in the forthcoming European elections, has condemned the decision by Riga's city council to revoke permission for this year's Pride march in the Latvian capital. "This is the kind of repressive action one might expected in Moscow, but Latvia is a member of the EU, and in the EU the civil liberties of everyone are meant to be protected, irrespective of sexual orientation," Jonathan comments.

"I am sending a letter of protest to the Latvian Embassy in London and if I am elected on June 4th, I will be raise the issue of eastern European curbs on Pride marches and other LGBT-focused events in the European Parliament"
