Tory reshuffle puts the lie to Cameron's pink veneer

July 3, 2007 7:37 PM

David Cameron's decision to appoint Sayeeda Warsi as Shadow minister for community cohesion makes a mockery of his claims to support equality for LGBT people, says DELGA Chair Jen Yockney.

"At the last election, Sayeeda Warsi fought on an openly homophobic platform. She is against an equal age of consent, and backs Section 28, the 80s law which sought to outlaw the very idea of homosexuality. Her laughable claims that homosexuality 'undermines family life' fall apart once they come up against the simple fact that gay people grow up in - and have - families too."

"Apparently the values that underpin the new Conservative notion of community cohesion are bullying, prejudice and discrimination."
