LGBT Lib Dems welcome Religious Civil Partnerships consultation

Adrian Trett, chair of LGBT Lib Dems, welcomes the consultation

Responding to today's launch of a consultation into civil partnership ceremonies in religious premises, the Liberal Democrat body for LGBT equality has encouraged people of all faiths and none to engage with the consultation. If successful, the consultation would allow individual religious premises to apply to their local authority for approval to host civil partnership registrations.

Adrian Trett, Chair of Liberal Democrats for LGBT Action, said "This consultation is an important step on the road to full equality for lesbian, gay and bi people. We hope that it will extend the possibility of religious ceremony in civil partnerships for those who seek that. We encourage people of all faiths and none to submit responses and engage with the consultation process.

"Because it requires no additional lawmaking, we support this consultation as a step forward towards the Lib Dem policy of full equality of marriage and civil partnership for all couples. We look forward to further consultation on marriage equality from the Home Office in the future."

The Liberal Democrats are the only major UK political party to support full marriage and civil partnership equality for all couples, specifically highlighting the problems caused for people in an existing marriage or civil partnership who undergo gender transition.

The consultation on civil partnerships in religious premises will run until 23 June and can be downloaded from the Equalities or Home Office websites.
