ID cards: gone

ID Cards - waste of money

ID cards: gone

The Labour ID Card system and related National Identity Register are to be abolished. Delga exec member Jen Yockney said "This is one of many pieces of good news for Lib Dem members and supporters from the new coalition government. In particular LGBT campaigners have expressed concerns about the implications of the ID system for privacy, and other issues such as its limitations for transgender and genderqueer people.

"The Lib Dems have campaigned against ID cards and the related register from the start, it was a multi billion pound scheme forever in search of a reason to exist, and now we have been able to put an end to them."

Delga exec member Dave Page adds: "The ID card scheme was first rolled out in Manchester, but very few people volunteered for one. Labour were spending hundreds of thousands of pounds every day on the unpopular scheme.

"The National Identity Register, the largest interlinked system of Government databases, was at the heart of the ID card scheme. While Labour told us that carrying the card would be voluntary, it was always compulsory that you would be registered and tracked for life like a criminal, with details of your life available to thousands of civil servants and private enterprise."
