Is change nigh for the 'blood ban'?

October 26, 2009 8:03 PM

Lib Dem LGBT group DELGA are pleased to highlight a demonstration tomorrow questioning the rules on blood donation in the UK. At present, men who have sex with men (whether gay and bisexual) are barred from giving blood, and straight or bisexual women are barred from donating for the twelve months following having sex with them. Many Lib Dem MPs have challenged this ruling and it is the policy of the Welsh Liberal Democrats to repeal the ban.

However, the committee which advises the Department of Health on donor exclusions has announced a public meeting tomorrow - October 27 - as part of its review into donor referrals and exclusions. The National Union of Students is organising an 'information picket' outside the meeting, providing information to people attending the meeting about the case for changing the rules on donation.

The picket will take place from 1pm at the Royal Horticultural Halls Conference Centre, Greycoat Street, London SW1P 2QD. Note while the picket is in a public space, attendance at the meeting itself is restricted.
