Not quite in the census, but...!

Stephen Williams MP has welcomed news that the Office of National Statistics, who compile the UK census and similar surveys, will now be including a question on sexual orientation in most of their work - though not in the 2011 census itself. "I think it is a welcome step forward that they will be asking these questions," he said. "It's important we understand the pattern of gay life in modern Britain."

Stephen is the Lib Dem MP for Bristol West and led on the issue in Parliament, pressing in an Early Day Motion in 2007 for the next census to include a question on sexual orientation.

DELGA Chair Jen Yockney said, "it's disappointing not to have the question included in the census as well. It suggests that of the many diversity issues, sexual orientation is viewed as somehow the shameful one we should not be comfortable to ask or answer - while it's OK to ask about people's race, faith, age and so forth. However including the question in the other ONS surveys will give us some very useful and authoritatively sourced information about lesbian, gay and bisexual people's lives."
