Lorely Burt MP wants to see the details of the government's equality plans

The Liberal Democrats cautiously welcomed the Government's consultation paper on a Single Equality Bill published today.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Women and Equality Spokesperson, Lorely Burt MP said: "The Liberal Democrats have long called for a Single Equality Bill, so this much delayed consultation is welcome but very overdue. We've argued that there is little justification for different treatment for different groups, but unfortunately the Government's haphazard method of law-making has left many gaps.

"Ministers must not use a new harassment offence as cover to reintroduce its controversial incitement to religious hatred measures, which have already been rejected by Parliament

"However, we do support many specific suggestions like those in regard to preventing age discrimination in the provision of goods and services, and a broader duty on public bodies to promote equality.

"In order to understand the Government's true intentions, we believe a draft bill should be published."
