Renew now - or be forced onto the "database state" ID card system

The government's intended start-date for the new ID card system is less than seven weeks away, on 26th March, according to information leaked to campaign group no2id. If you want a passport without being extensively interviewed and added to the government's ID database, you need to act now.

DELGA Secretary Eve Friday said, "the government has made many reassurances to minority groups that the database will not pose a threat to their liberty or open to abuse. However this is the same government which promised the database would not be commercially available - and indeed which told us there were WMDs in Iraq and that they would legislate to prevent university top-up fees!"

"The current administration may not have plans for the ID system which threaten the liberty and equality of LGBT citizens. However the next government, or the one after, might turn out to be a lot more hostile, and would have the system already in place to identify LGBT people across Britain. If that seems far-fetched remember it's only 20 years ago that a Conservative government, aided by the Labour Party, sought to eliminate the very idea of homosexuality from our society through Section 28."

"LGBT citizens should be very wary of what the database state could mean. If you want to go abroad any time in the next ten years, get a passport now to avoid compulsory registration onto the ID database."
