"I'm greatly impressed by Stonewall Cymru's innovative use of the internet to provide support for young lesbian, gay and bisexual people who face homophobic bullying in school," says DELGA Chair Jen Yockney of a web-based initiative to help isolated young people get help and advice.
Stonewall Cymru is hosting a live web chat during Anti-Bullying Week for young lesbian, gay and bisexual people who are experiencing homophobic bullying in school. Young people will be able to chat with trained advisers from ChildLine and the LGBT Helpline Cymru about their experiences, and receive advice about dealing with anti-gay bullying. The live web chat will take place on Tuesday 21 November between 12 noon and 6pm, and is hosted by Canllaw Online at www.credu.co.uk
"We are still hearing appalling cases of bullying every week yet very few young people know where to go for advice and support," says Matthew Batten, Stonewall Cymru's Policy and Public Affairs Officer. "The 'Speak Out' chat room will give young people the opportunity to share experiences and get advice in confidence about dealing with anti-gay bullying. Because of the informal nature of chat rooms young people often feel more comfortable chatting online than in person or over the phone."
Jen Yockney said, "Recent figures from the NSPCC show how the proportion of calls to ChildLine about homophobic bullying is on the increase, yet too many teachers still do not intervene. Telling your parents is, sadly, still not an option for many young people. Using the net to reach out to those isolated gay and bisexual young people is an excellent idea and I'm sure it will provide a vital source of help to many."
"The evidence from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender support groups and services is that increasingly people of all ages are using the net to get basic information and support about issues related to sexuality."
