Discrimination costs us all dear

March 21, 2006 1:15 PM

A new Government report showing how discrimination at school can ruin adult life for many gays, lesbians and bisexual people reflects the lost opportunities that prejudice has cost all of society over many years, says DELGA Chair Kelvin Meyrick.

Discrimination has forced many young LGB people to leave school early and face grow disadvantages in the modern world. That's the conclusion of the interim report of the Equalities Review, whose chairman Trevor Phillips says those who leave school early due to barriers such as homophobia face a life of lower paid jobs and less productivity.

The review was initiated to identify groups who are suffering from disadvantage. It's thought the loss of productivity costs the British economy £80 billion a year. As well as LGBT people, the report also recognises how single parents and people from some ethnic minorities are more likely to face being disadvantaged in Britain.

Trevor Phillips says, "this Review shows where we need to focus our efforts to ensure that all of those who are disadvantaged in some way are given the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to a vibrant and successful UK economy".

Kelvin Meyrick, DELGA Chair said: "I welcome this publication as part of documenting the impact of homophobia, transphobia and other prejudice in Britain on people growing up today and over recent decades."

"It confirms, as Liberals have argued for years, that tackling discrimination and bigotry delivers a boost not just for those directly affected, but for society as a whole."

The review now moves on to a public consultation stage.
