Lorely looks to the future with DELGA

April 7, 2006 4:01 PM

Lorely Burt, Lib Dem MP for Solihull, has been appointed as the party's spokesperson on LGBT and other equality issues, following the election of Menzies Campbell as Party Leader.

She told DELGA:

As the new Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Women and Equality, I look forward to working with DELGA to actively promote lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered issues in the Party and in Parliament.

Society has become more tolerant over the years, but there is still much more that needs to be done. Discrimination, prejudice, homophobic bullying and homophobic violence all still exist and all need to be addressed.

Nobody should be afraid to be open about their sexuality, at home, at school or on the street. No couple should be penalised just because they happen to be of the same sex. No discrimination should be tolerated in the workplace.

I am proud that the Liberal Democrats have been at the vanguard of LGBT equality. It was the Liberal Democrat Lord Lester who introduced the Civil Partnership Bill and Liberal Democrats who had the best voting record on LGBT issues in the last Parliament.

We must continue to be at the vanguard and continue to fight for true equality in law and true tolerance in society. I welcome the ideas, comments and opinions from all members of DELGA who can contribute to the debate about how this can be achieved.
