A challenging year ahead

Kelvin Meyrick, the new Chair of DELGA, has set out his vision for the coming year.
He said: "I am thrilled to be taking over the Chair of DELGA at what must surely be one of the Liberal Democrat Party's most challenging and exciting times for many years.
"As we enter 2006, our party is in the process of electing a new leader. Whoever is successful, I know that they and the new front bench will have the task of taking the party forward as well as building on the success of Charles Kennedy. I look forward to meeting the new leader and to discussing with them the work of DELGA.
"The first major challenges which must be met are of course are the May Local Elections and I am eager that DELGA should play its part in the election process supporting candidates across the country. Several polls over the last 12 months have pointed to the huge dissatisfaction with the Labour Government amongst the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. We must grasp this opportunity and make sure the Liberal Democrats message reaches as many of the LGBT community as possible throughout the country.
"Despite opposition from the Conservatives and others, many equality victories have been achieved over the last few years. However, there is still work to be done, especially in the area of workplace discrimination and my aim is to ensure that DELGA's voice is heard. I also believe that we should not forget that all our recent victories have been hard won and we should never take them for granted.
"I would like to see DELGA grow both in size and influence. Our voice must and will be heard.
