Liberal Democrats on Manchester City Council have welcomed an innovative new housing and homelessness advice surgery for the city's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, launched by the council in partnership with local LGB project the Lesbian and Gay Foundation.
It follows the success of the council's ground breaking housing support service for older LGBT people.
For the first time, housing and homelessness advice will be provided by the city council right in the heart of Manchester's lesbian and gay village at the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, providing a safe space for LGBT people to come and discuss their housing issues with a dedicated housing support worker. This will also help the city council to get a clear indication of the type of support needed and the level of unmet need within the LGBT communities.
Help and advice will be given on a range of issues including homophobic or transphobic harassment, domestic violence, housing benefit problems, health issues affected by housing, landlord difficulties, general homelessness advice and how to register for rehousing.
The initiative has support from both the Labour administration and the Liberal Democrat Opposition.
Lib Dem Leader Simon Ashley said, "It is only right that the council tailors its services to meet the needs of Manchester's many diverse communities. We want this new service to address the issues which affect members of the LGBT community."
Councillor Paul Shannon, Shadow Executive Member for Housing, added: "We are proud that this is one of the first services of its kind in the country and will complement other initiatives which provide support for groups requiring housing advice."
The advice surgery - launching on Tuesday 10th January - is to be held every Tuesday evening between 6pm and 8pm at the Lesbian & Gay Foundation, Princess House, 105 - 107 Princess Street, Manchester. No appointment is necessary.
