Detectives in Hackney are investigating a homophobic attack that left two men with serious stab injuries. Police were called to Hackney Road, near to the junction with Cremer Street, at 2am on Thursday 16 June after reports of a stabbing.

It appears that two men had been waiting at a bus stop when they were approached by a group of youths and stabbed. The men were taken to an east London hospital were they received treatment for stab injuries. One of the men has since been released whilst the other continues to receive treatment for his injuries.

Police are treating this as a homophobic attack and are now looking to trace up to six youths of Asian appearance aged between 16 and 20 years.

"This was an unprovoked and vicious attack on two people trying to make their way home," said Detective Inspector Helen Millichap of Hackney's Community Safety Unit.

"The attackers were prepared to use extreme violence and I am appealing to anyone who could provide us with information to come forward immediately.

"In particular we are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the Hackney Road area between 1am-2:30am on Thursday 16 June. They may have vital information that could help us to identify the attackers."

DI Millichap added: "We are doing everything we can to identify those responsible for this crime and I ask that people remain vigilant and alert and to report anything suspicions to police.

Richard Porter, chair of DELGA said: "The Metropolitan Police are working closely with local LGBT organisations and I would also encourage people to come forward, or to call Crimestoppers anonymously, if anybody has information that could assist the enquiry."

Anyone who can assist should contact the Incident Room at Hackney CSU on 020 7275 4073, alternatively, to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
