Southwark LGBT Website Launched

December 15, 2004 12:00 AM

A new website, dedicated to the first ever history month for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, is to be launched in Southwark.

Run by Schools OUT! (an organisation for LGBT people working in education), the website www.lgbthistorymonth.org.uk is funded by the Department of Education and Skills. It will provide a resource for those planning lessons, as well as offering ideas for school assemblies and events, together with links to other websites containing relevant LGBT information.

Meanwhile, the first ever national LGBT history month is due to take place in February 2005. It will celebrate the contributions and achievements of the LGBT community, both past and present.

Southwark council is working in partnership with Schools Out! and was involved in planning the celebrations right from the start. A new community development worker in Southwark has already started to help plan future events dedicated to the LGBT community. These include health and well-being information as well as a photographic exhibition.

The official launch of the website takes place at the Starr Auditorium, Tate Modern, on December 16 at 4.30pm. Guest speakers will include Grayson Perry, Award winning artist, Linda Bellos, Southwark LGBT Network; Anna Raeburn, Journalist and Broadcaster and Peter Tatchell, Human Rights Campaigner. The public are welcome to attend and should contact Dax Ashworth on 020 7525 5659, refreshments will be provided.
